How Online Degrees Work

No campus, no semesters, no lecture halls — so what actually happens? The full mechanics of the online degree: how you study, how you're assessed, and what makes the credential worth something.

The model

Study on your schedule, prove what you learned

Strip away the campus and the online degree is a simple machine with three parts.

1. Learn

Course materials — readings, videos, structured modules — are available around the clock. You decide when and how fast to move through them. There are no live lectures to attend and no semesters to wait for; enrollment at ACLAS opens any day of the year.

2. Prove it

Each course ends with an assessment. At ACLAS that means a multiple-choice quiz per course — clear, checkable, and the same standard for everyone. Pass the quizzes, complete the courses. Other providers use proctored exams or projects; the principle is identical: no assessment, no degree.

3. Get credentialed

Finish every required course and the college issues your degree — with a verification code anyone can check free at aclas.edu.gr/verify. The credential is the product; the verification is what makes it trustworthy.

The honest trade The online model wins on price, speed and flexibility. It does not give you a campus network, and ACLAS degrees do not carry U.S. Department of Education accreditation or government recognition — see the accreditation page for exactly what the credentials do and don't include. Choose the format that fits your actual goal.

Value

What makes an online degree worth something?

Three things separate a credential employers respect from an expensive PDF.

1. Real assessment

A degree is a claim that you know something. That claim is only as strong as the test behind it. Ask any provider: what exactly must a student do to earn this? Vague answers are a red flag.

2. Independent verification

If an employer can't confirm your degree without emailing someone and waiting two weeks, the credential has friction built in. Free, instant, public verification — like the ACLAS lookup — removes it.

3. Transparent limits

Paradoxically, a provider that tells you what its degrees don't do is more trustworthy than one that implies they do everything. Check what any college discloses about recognition before you trust what it promises about careers.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The things people ask before they believe the model.

How does an online degree actually work day to day?

You enroll, get access to course materials, and study on your own schedule — there are no fixed lecture times. At ACLAS each course ends with a multiple-choice quiz; pass the quizzes and you complete the course. Finish all required courses and the college issues your degree with a verifiable credential. The whole model removes semesters, classrooms and commuting from the equation.

Are online degrees easier than traditional degrees?

The format is more flexible, not easier in any honest sense. You still have to learn the material and pass every assessment — nobody can do that part for you. What disappears is the logistics: no commuting, no fixed timetable, no waiting for the next semester. Self-discipline replaces the classroom as the thing that keeps you moving.

How are online students assessed without exams in a hall?

It depends on the provider. ACLAS assesses each course with a multiple-choice quiz taken online — straightforward and checkable. Other providers use proctored exams, written assignments, or project portfolios. Whatever the method, ask how assessment works before you enroll: a degree with no meaningful assessment behind it is a red flag, not a feature.

Do employers take online degrees seriously?

Increasingly, yes — but it depends on the employer and the credential. What convinces a hiring manager is verifiability: can they independently confirm your degree is real? ACLAS publishes a free online verification lookup plus Qualification Check and IECC confirmation, so any employer can validate a credential in minutes. A degree nobody can verify is worth much less than one anybody can.

How long does an online degree take?

Self-paced programs let you set the tempo. At ACLAS, motivated learners working around a job typically finish a degree in 1–2 years; there is no fixed deadline forcing you faster or holding you back. Traditional online programs that mirror semesters take the usual 3–4 years for a bachelor's. Ask whether the pace is yours to choose or the university's.

What does an online degree cost compared to campus?

Far less, because the expensive parts — buildings, dorms, in-person staff per student — are gone. The ACLAS MBA is USD 89 one-time; a traditional MBA runs $15,000 to well over $100,000. The trade is real too: you get flexibility and price, not a campus network or government-backed accreditation. Compare what you actually need, not just the sticker price.

Can I verify an online degree independently?

You should be able to, and you should insist on it. Every ACLAS degree comes with a verification code employers and third parties can check free at aclas.edu.gr/verify — no account, no fee. If a provider's degrees can't be independently verified, treat that as a warning sign regardless of how the website looks.

Is an online degree right for working adults?

It was practically designed for them. No live classes means study happens after work, on weekends, during commutes — whenever your life allows. The people who struggle are those who need external structure: if you need a timetable and a classroom to stay on track, a self-paced program will test you. Know yourself before you choose the format.
